Give Time. Live Slow.

Volunteer in Tar Village

Step out of the hurry of modern life and into a 700-year-old Ladakhi village. Live with a local family, work the land, and contribute to a community quietly keeping its heritage alive.

Tar is a small, self-sustaining community nestled deep in the mountains of Ladakh. Isolated from urban influences, it has preserved a way of life rooted in nature, traditional knowledge, and collective resilience — organic farming, sustainable water management, and indigenous craftsmanship.

Like many remote villages, Tar faces youth migration, economic instability, and the gradual decline of traditional practices. The Tar Revitalization Project is a community-driven response — preserving what already exists while mindfully adapting useful innovation. It is regeneration, not imposition.

Volunteers are welcomed not as tourists, but as active participants. You wake with the sunrise, work with the land, learn from the elders, and contribute to a model for sustainable, self-sufficient living.

Code of Conduct

Living in Tar

Tar follows a quiet, simple rhythm. These guidelines help volunteers integrate with respect, humility, and care for the village's fragile ecosystem.

  • Follow local customs and be mindful of traditional practices.
  • Wear modest clothing.
  • Maintain a substance-free environment — no alcohol, smoking, or drugs.
  • Engage with the community with humility and openness.
  • Keep noise low and respect Tar's quiet rhythm.
  • Always seek consent before photographing people or homes.
  • Participate in daily tasks — cooking, cleaning, and farming are shared.
  • Live simply. Expect minimal infrastructure and a self-sufficient lifestyle.
  • Avoid plastic. Carry reusables and use biodegradable soaps and personal care.
  • Segregate waste properly — organic is composted; carry out non-biodegradables.
  • Conserve water. It is scarce in Ladakh; use minimal amounts for bathing and washing.
  • Prefer reusable or biodegradable menstrual products (cotton pads, menstrual cups).
  • Bring required medications — healthcare facilities are far from the village.
  • Prepare for cold weather and basic living conditions.
  • Expect minimal connectivity. Embrace the digital detox.
  • Acclimatize gradually to high altitude to avoid altitude sickness.
