Welcome to Tar Farmstays
Tar was once a thriving agro-pastoralist village where each household had their own 50 or 60 “ralug” (sheep and goats). The village had families and approximately 80 individuals, most of whom were allied to government jobs with the tourism industry. During the short summer months and early autumn, a few travellers comes and stay with the families to experience the traditional Ladakhi lifestyle and way of life. The village is a contrast from most of the villages of Ladakh, a village with no road connectivity, but it has minimised the influence of modernity and maintained cultural and traditional ethnicity. Now, due to urbanisation and a lack of connectivity to the outer world, most of the people have left the village for their survival.
Currently, Tar Village can accommodate a maximum of 20 guests per day, with equal distribution among the homestays. We do not have any guest houses, hotels, or resorts; only farmstay accommodations are available for visitors. The charges vary depending on the duration of the guest's stay.
TREK TO TAR VILLAGE
The trek to Tar covers a distance of 3.5 kilometers but can feel much longer, partly due to the 350 meter climb. The adventure begins in Nurla. Crossing a wooden foot bridge over the mighty Indus River, begin up a narrow valley cleft into the mountains of Sham Valley, vast rock formations once part of an ancient ocean floor.About an hour into the journey you will arrive to the field and houses of the Yokma, or lower village of Tar. Between the Yokma and Tar, you will notice a unique large Himalayan juniper tree, as well as a natural spring that crosses the path just before a narrow gorge of massive limestone cliffs. Please be respectful of all these natural wonders.
Within the gorge, the 21 Taras, Achi Chyoki Dolma, Dolma Nyishu Tsak Shik, once appeared on the cliff in a place where now villagers make offerings and hang prayer flags. The Dolma are an embodiment of compassionate action, protecting all who are in danger or afraid. A few minutes beyond, stop and see if you can notice the Gonbo Rangjon, the great protector, on the left side of the path. Colorful prayer flags, butter lamps, and incense are living offerings of people's faith and gratitude in these places. Please travel
through them as respectfully as you would in any temple.

EXPERIENCE THE FARM LIFE
The village has a unique approach to food production where we collectively grow our own food. Instead of selling our crops, we come together to farm for the benefit of all. As spring arrives, we plough the fields using our sturdy d zo (a hybrid of cow and yak ) and plant barley and wheat. The summer sun nourishes our crops, aided by water from the nearby glaciers. In addition to the cereal crops, we also cultivateapricot trees and vegetable gardens surrounding the fields.
Fall marks the harvest season, where we invite others to help us with tasks such as drying apricots, grinding flour, and storing food for our animals. Our farms are home to sheeps, cows, and dzo.The waste from these animals plays a crucial role in maintaining the fertility of our soil, ensuring a bountiful harvest. Farming in Tar is atestament to community spirit, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the food we produce. We welcome you to join us and experience this unique way of farming firsthand!
