History: Lamayuru has a rich historical background dating back to the 10th century. According to legend, the great Indian scholar Naropa visited the region and meditated in a cave that later became the site of the Lamayuru Monastery. The monastery was founded in the 11th century by Mahasiddha Naropa's disciple, Rinchen Zangpo, also known as Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. Rinchen Zangpo was an important figure in the spread of Buddhism in Western Tibet and Ladakh.

Cultural Significance: Lamayuru Monastery, also known as Yuru Gompa, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance in the region. It is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh and acts as a major spiritual center for the local population. The monastery is situated atop a hill overlooking the village and is an architectural marvel, featuring beautiful frescoes, thangka paintings, and statues of Buddha.

Buddhist Influence: The predominant cultural influence in Lamayuru is Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery follows the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, also known as the Yellow Hat sect. They engage in daily rituals, prayers, meditation, and perform ceremonies for the well-being of the community.

The most famous festival celebrated at Lamayuru Monastery is the Yuru Kabgyat, also called the Mask Dance Festival. During this festival, monks don traditional robes and ornate masks, representing various deities and spirits. They perform mesmerizing masked dances, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of traditional musical instruments.
